At Col du Lauteret, the high point on the road from Grenoble to Briancon is a small chapel.

The drive from Grenoble to Briancon is a wonderfully scenic drive through the mountains. A great place to stop to look around is the highpoint, Col du Lauteret, at 2058 meters. To the west are the towering glaciated peaks of La Meije. To the north is the high pass, Col du Galibier. This is closed by snow from October to June,
A small alpine chapel will draw your attention. On the chapel are two memorial plaques for the French Resistance fighters killed near here on 11 Aug 1944. This chapel marks their graves.
As you enjoy the view of the magnificant countryside, also think of the tragedy of wars.
