John "Buck" O'Neil was a star of the Negro Leagues, playing first base and managing the Kansas City Monarchs. He was also instrumental in establishing the Negro League Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

Buck O’Neil was born on November 13, 1911 in Carrabelle, Florida. He left Florida in 1934 and started playing semi-pro baseball where he was a teamed with the legendary Leroy “Satchel” Page. In 1937 Buck signed to play with the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League. In 1938, Buck joined the Kansas Monarch’s where he played and managed for the next several years. In 1956 he became a scout for the Chicago Cubs. In 1962 the Cubs named him as coach, making him the first black coach in the Major Leagues. After spending many years with the Cubs, Buck returned to Kansas City where he became a scout for the Kansas City Royals in 1988. Buck worked tirelessly in leading the effort to establish the Negro League Baseball Museum in Kansas City and served on its board of directors until his death on August 5, 2006. December 7, 2006, Buck O’Neil was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.
The Buck O’Neil Monument is located near the entrance to Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. This monument should NOT be confused with his gravesite which is located a short distance away in Section 103 – Row 3 – Grave 12.
