Garden City is located in eastern Clark County, South Dakota, about nine miles north of US highway 212 and about 4 miles west of SD Highway 25.
Its population in July of 2008 was 58, reflecting a population drop of about 20% from the 2000 census.
The town was settled by German, English, Norwegian, Irish, Danish and French peoples.
According to a monument on the grounds, the school started in 1914 and closed in 1977 (if the inscription is correct).
As with all towns, when the school closes, the decline of the town increases.
