Grand Canyon Caverns is a natural limestone cavern 210 feet underground and the largest dry cavern in the U.S. In 1928, tourists were given a lantern and lowered in by rope...now the caverns are reachable by elevator, stairs and rope-lighted trails.

The Grand Canyon Caverns has been giving tours to visitors traveling along Route 66 for over 80 years. The original 1928 gravel road was placed right next to the cave's natural entrance so "Walter and Miles Peck could entice the first travelers to try the dope on a rope special tour."
The Caverns are located along the middle of the longest stretch of Route 66 still in use today..."100 miles of beauty and scenery you will not get on the interstate." Driving Route 66 between Seligman and Kingman only takes an extra 17 minutes and it is truck-free since they have to stay on I-40.
