Massive Gothic Picards Tower (Pikartská vež), built from sandstone ashlars, is the last remaining part of the medieval fortification system of a small picturesque town Úštek in North Bohemian region.
Picards Tower, the largest and strongest tower of the former medieval town's fortification, was built by the Hussite commander Václav Carda of Petrovice in 1428 (the word "Picard / Pikart" is a pejorative denomination for the Hussite follower). The 4-storey tower, built from sandstone ashlars, has walls 2 m thick and is covered by a shingle saddle roof. The topmost storey has a lower ceiling than the other. When the tower burnt down in 1859, it was not restored in the original height. The tower serves nowadays as a space for exhibitions organized by a local museum.
