The Gothic-Renaissance Church of the Holy Savior (Kostel Sv. Salvátora), located in Salvátorská street in Old Town of Prague, belongs to the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. The Church of the Holy Savior is the largest Evangelic church in Prague.
The construction of the Church of the Holy Savior was enabled through a Religious Dictate released by Emperor Rudolph II. on July 9th, 1609. Through this act the Emperor legalized the freedom of religion in the Czech lands. The foundation stone was laid in 1611 and the church was completed three years later. The builders were Portestatnts of the Augsburg Confession.
The church owners changed many times due to the consequences of political events. After catastrophic defeat of Czech protestants in Battle of White Mountain (1620) the winners, Catholic league, took all - including this church. Years it was a part of Paulane monastery, after its abolishment in 1784, the church housed a mint until 1863. Finally, the church was sold to Czech Evangelicals in 1863. The three-aisle Church of the Holy Savior, located between the streets of Salvátorská, Dušní and Kostecná, was reconstructed for congregational purposes, consecrated and continues to the present day. A Baroque steeple, 52.5 m tall, stands by the south-west corner of the church. Its highest floor with large semicircular windows is graced by pilasters and castellated cornices. The roof is crowned by an octahedral bulbous cupola, covered lantern and finial.
