Montpelier was the boyhood home and later the presidential home of James Madison. After his death the estate was owned by different owners until it finally ended in the hands of the duPont family. The duPont family added the Italian statuary and this sundial to the garden in the early 1900's.
Considering this garden is within the estate of President Madison, the inscription on the face of the sundial is a bit ironic, "Feare God and Obey the King"
