Inaugurated in 1889, July 28th, the Funicular of Nazaré is considered one of the better initiatives of the town’s history; allowing the growth and development of Sítio as well as a better connection to the beach quarter.
The responsible for the project was Raul Mesnier du Ponsard, Gustave Eiffel’s pupil and responsible for most of Lisbon ’s cable cars. Until 1963, a steam machine pulled the first cars, which were replaced, in 1968, by new and safer electric cars. These cars worked tirelessly until 2001, being replaced by more modern, comfortable and safer ones, in July 2002.
