Unlike municipal tanks which supply drinking water, the primary purpose for this tank was fire protection. If electricity, or the town's water system, failed for any reason, several hundred thousand gallons of gravity-fed water in the elevated tank could operate the emergency sprinkler system.

The mill dates from around 1900, and was also known as Flynt Fabrics.
This tank replaced a 122,000-gallon standpipe which was fed from the river.

DIRECTIONS: To reach from downtown, go 0.5 mile west on King Street. Turn left onto S. Nash Street (at a traffic light). Go 0.25 mile south to the building, on the right. Continue south, where the road makes a sharp bend to the right, and go up the hill for a view of the tank and the rear of the facility.
