The Davie County Courthouse stands on the courthouse square at the center of the town of Mocksville, North Carolina. Davie County was named for William R. Davie, who served as Governor of North Carolina in 1798 and 1799. Also located on the courthouse square is a memorial to Daniel Boone who lived in the area from 1750 – 1759. Daniel Boone’s parents, Square and Sarah Boone lived in the area until their deaths and are buried in the nearby Joppa Cemetery in Mocksville. Colonel Thomas Wilson Ferebee was also born in Davie County. Colonel Ferebee served as the bombardier on the Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan during World War II. Colonel Ferebee is buried in the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery near Mocksville. The original Courthouse was constructed with a distinct cupola and courthouse clock which is still working today. Newer additions have been added to the original structure over the years, but the original courthouse is still serving the citizens of Davie County today.
