The former U.S. Post Office was built in 1903 at a time that Centerville was a booming coal mining town. The Colonial Revival styled building was designed by James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the United States Department of the Treasury from 1897 to 1912. After sitting vacant for a few years the building was converted to the Appanoose County Historical & Coal Mining Museum.
