The statue was placed by the Boy Scouts in celebration of their 40th anniversary. This is one of nearly 200 which were placed around the country. The project was the idea of Jack Whitaker, then Scout Commissioner of the Kansas City Area Council. The copper statues were manufactured by Friedley-Voshardt Co. of Chicago, Illinois and purchased through the Kansas City Boy Scouts office. The plaque below the statue reads:
