The Nolichucky/Unaka Ranger District of the Cherokee National Forest is right at the Tennessee-North Carolina border just north of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Ranger Station is located on TN70 south of Greeneville, TN. The staf provides visitor information, interpretive materials, and various permits.
The district derives its name from the Nolichucky River and 5,180-foot Unaka Mountain. The word “Nolichucky” (Nula-tsu’gu-yi) means “Evergreen Place” in the Cherokee language. There district has wildflower meadows, hardwood forests, mountain streams, winding rivers, high elevation mountain balds, woodland trails, whitewater rafting, and 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail passing right through it.
