Zarbula Sundial 1857: Arvieux, Queyras, France - Sundials on Waymarking.com

Travelling up the valley through Arvieux towards the Col d'Izoard, you will see several fine sundials starting at the church on the south end of town. There are more on your right as you pass through the village. The 1857 Zarbula is on your left on an old house across from the Marie. This original dial, attributed to Zarbula is not one of the better examples of his artistic style. Motto: Sol Me Nos Umbra. SAF reference 0500701

Zarbula Sundial from 1857 is painted on a chapel as you enter the hamlet of Escoyères high above the valley of the Guil. The road up is narrow, gravel with 31 switchbacks. We chose to hike up. The Zarbula sundial on the chapel was beautifully restored by Rémi Potey. The decoration includes a squirrel, two birds, and the words "Suzon con" (with Susan) discovered during the restoration.

The hamlet of Les Escoyères is part of the commune of Arvieux but it is accessible from the valley below not over the mountains to the Arvieux area. This perched village has been occupied since Roman times as stone from Roman monuments and buildings has been reused to build the current stone buildings.

Arvieux are considered part of the Queyras district, the area drained by the Guil River upstream from the gorge (Combe du Queyras) and the hydro dam at Maison de Roi. In this valley Queyras extends to the Col d'Izoard. Queyras is much more than Chateau Queyras and Saint Veran.
