In front of Hertford Library is a young tree surrounded by a metal bench. On the wall of the library is a plaque commemorating the planting of an oak tree at the site on the 17th of July 1897. These two, seemingly incompatible, statements can be explained by the fact that the original oak tree failed to flourish owing to an unspecified incident involving an elephant!
