This copy of a bust of George Washington at the House of the Temple in Washington, DC, was designed by noted sculptor Avard Fairbanks. The original was commissioned for the U.S. Bicentennial and had once been located at the Salt Lake City Airport.

In researching this sculpture, it was found that there are many copies of this dignified bust of the first U.S. president, George Washington.
Designed and created by Avard Fairbanks, noted for many of his colossal public art sculptures, this design was copyrighted in 1975. The original sculpture, once at the Salt Lake City International Airport, can now be found at the George Washington University in Washington DC along with several other copies which are used to demarcate the urban campus.
This copy is located in the garden behind the House of the Temple, headquarters of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in the Southern Jurisdiction located at 1733 Sixteenth Street, NW, between R and S Streets. It was placed to honor George Washington, once an active and still highly respected member of Freemasonry. Many of the new American ceremonies during his presidency, such as the very first oath of presidential office, were modeled after Masonic ritual. Masons and President Washington presided over the laying of the U.S. Capitol cornerstone in 1793.
Many other copies of this bust of George Washington exist and some are located at Mt. Vernon, Virginia; USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier, Norfolk, Virginia; City Park, Washington, Utah; Prembroke College, Oxford, England; Chapter Headquarters, Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Beacon, New York and Freemont, Nebraska.
