Erected in 1872 as a Civil War memorial, it is one of the most notable features of Mount Auburn Cemetary. It was created by Martin Milmore.

Martin Milmore's Sphinx commissioned by Jacob Bigelow in commemoration of the preservation of the Union and the end of slavery. Carved at this site from a single block of granite from Maine, it was completed in July 1872.
