Huckleberries, which look like smaller blueberries with similar flavor, are available for picking in Grayson Highlands State Park from early August to mid-September.

One of the most popular trips for BSA Troop 48 is Grayson Highlands in early September when the huckleberries are ripe. Three cobblers were cooked in dutch ovens this year, while "blueberry" pancakes were enjoyed in the morning.
Park at Massie Gap (near N36° 37.990 W081° 30.543 which are coords for a micro geocache). The scouts enjoy heading up Rhododendron Trail as the berries are plentiful with wild ponies and some rock outcroppings to climb just off the northbound Appalachian Trail. As long as you are not into the reforested areas, there are likely huckleberry bushes nearby. The backcountry also offers more unpicked bushes with large berries.
I checked "yes" on the fee as it costs $3 per car to enter the state park, but picking the berries is free. Recommend long pants (to protect from occassional blackberry briar) and large sun hat (as it is out in the open) for clothing.
