This tree witnessed the building of the Old Capitol building beginning in 1847. It witnessed accidental burning of the interior of the Capitol during the Civil War December 28, 1862. It witnessed the reopening of the Capitol on March 1, 1882 after it completely reconstructed. It witnessed the State Capitol being moved to a new building in 1932.
