~Barker's Store~ - Underground Railroad Sites on Waymarking.com

I've been to this store a few times and have bought an antique or 2 here and there. This is one of the first true signs of spring around here when this antique shop opens up. The owner of the store tries to keep it open every weekend and has plenty of history to check out as well as some you can buy. The owner was just recently (in the past couple years) cleaning out some of the old drawers and noticed a loose board behind the drawers. She pulled out the drawers and board and found the hidden room behind the stairs. That little room hadn't been opened in years. They installed a light and covered the hole with plexiglass. I tried to get some pics of the hidden room but they don't really show all that well. She will be more then happy to talk to anyone about the underground railroad. My advise is to try to come on a weekend during the summer months for the full effect. There is also a display of a kind of message quilt that was used as a secret map. The panels sewn onto these quilts would help slaves and the people that were helping the slaves to find the best routes to take to Canada through the use of various pictures. I hope the pics I took will be readable for all. Definately check out my gallery pics and try to blow them up a bit so you can read how the quilts were used.
