The Alfred L. Shapleigh Mansion at 6 Portland Place was built in 1915 for Alfred L and Mina Shapleigh. The Richardsonian Romanesque style mansion was designed by architectural firm Hellmuth & Hellmuth.

Alfred L. Shapleigh was a hardware magnate becoming involved in his the firm his father had started. He also branched out into other business enterprises including lead mining and banking.
