The George O. Carpenter Mansion at 12 Portland Place was built in 1905-1906 for George O. and Caroline Carpenter. The mansion was designed in an Italianate-Mediterranean style by by architects Mauran, Russell and Garden.

George O. Carpenter earned his fortune in the lead industry, starting first as a clerk in the St. Louis Lead & Oil Company working his way up to the presidency of the company. After mergers of this company with others the company became the National Lead Company and he was the president of the larger company. He also had interests in banks, coal companies and railroads among others.
