About 75 percent of the Crow tribe's approximately 8,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eighty-five percent speak Crow as their first language. The name of the tribe, Apsáalooke, was mistranslated by early interpreters as "people of [the] crows." It actually means "children of the large-beaked bird," a name given to them by their neighboring tribe, the Hidatsa.

Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain the staus in the traditional Crow manner. He was a visionary leader who helped his people adapt to the loss of the buffalo and encroaching white population in the late 1800s and to negotiate with the U.S. government. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home to the state of Montana as a park for all people to enjoy.

The Crow Indian Reservation is the largest of the 7 Indian Reservations and is located in south central Montana, bordered by Wyoming to the south and the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation to the east. The reservation encompasses approximately 2.3 million acres, which includes the northern end of the Bighorn Mountains, Wolf Mountains and Pryor Mountains. The Bighorn River flows north from Yellowtail Dam and joins the Little Bighorn River just outside Hardin, Montana. The city of Billings is approximately 10 miles northwest of the reservation boundary.

The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of about 300 head.
Did you know? During Crow Fair, over 12,000 Crow people live in the encampment of more than 2,000 tipis and 1,200 tents.
