Part of the architectural detail of the H. H. Richardson designed Allegheny Courthouse, are the griffin and dragon carving details over the door of the Grant Street entrances. There are two pairs of them, one pair over each doorway.
One pair of images is a set of griffins. Both stand with their backs to each other. One has an eagle-like head and is by an hourglass. The other has more of a pelican-like head and is by a steaming or flaming cauldron. Between them are vine-like features with birds in them including one that looks like a pelican.
The other pair of images is a griffin and a dragon. The griffin appears to bee looking over its shoulder at the dragon, while the dragon is looking back over its shoulder. Again, more vine and animal images are between.
