The typical visitor to this building is probably so intent on why they're here, they never notice the dedication.
Directly across the street from the statehouse, the building stands on the site where Admiral George Dewey was born. Dewey is best known for having won the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War without a single American lost to combat. He went on to become the only person in US history to achieve the rank of Admiral of the Navy, the highest rank of that service.
Whether this tidbit actually figured in the decision to dedicate the building to veterans is unknown, but it seems a bit more than coincidental.
