Williamson County was established February 28, 1839 from a portion of Franklin County. Since the county's inception the county seat has been located in Marion.

The current courthouse was built beginning in 1969 and dedicated November 19, 1971. This courthouse replaced one which had been located on the Public Square which had been built in 1889, and was where the current clock tower is located.
