Located in McCook County, South Dakota, on the intersections of US Highway 81 and SD Highway 38, Salem is about 3 miles north of Interstate 90.
It is the County Seat of McCook County and was incorporated on November 30, 1888.
It is made up of German, Norwegian, Irish, and Swedish ancestries.
The population of the town is 1,345 as of July 2007, and remains about the same as the 2000 census.
