Officers Walt Frago and Roger Gore called for backup then stopped a car after a report of a person brandishing a firearm. The passenger, Jack Twinning, opened his door and shot officer Fargo twice. He turned and shot officer Gore once and Gore returned fire. The driver, Bobby Davis, shot Gore twice at close range. Both officers died at the scene. As officers James Pence and George Alleyn pulled in, they came under fire. They put out a call for help then took cover. More shooting occured and the officers were shot. Officer Pence died at the scene. Officer Alleyn died in route to the hospital. During the shooting, suspect Davis was injured.
The suspects fled and split up. Twinnings briefly held a hostage but shot himself once he knew he was caught. Davis was taken into custody and stood trial. He was given the death sentence but later it was change to life in prison.
The stop took place in the parking lot of J's Restaurant (which is now a Marie Callenders) and a Standard gas station. The gas station has been changed to a Chevron station and has moved across the intersection. A Hilton Garden Inn now covers the area where the shooting took place.
There is a plaque and 4 trees at the Newhall CHP station, in memory of the officers, about a mile down the road from the crime scene. (N34 26.394 W118 36.044) The horrible tragedy of this incident eventually brought some good changes to the CHP and law enforcement in general.
