During World War II, many Dutch resistance fighters were held prison in Scheveningen (the prison, euphemistically called the Oranje hotel or Orange Hotel) and between 250 and 300 of them were shot in the nearby dunes in an area known as the Waalsdorpervlakte.
The memorial consists of four simple bronze crosses and a stone plaque reading 1940-1945. A few meters to the southeast is placed a Bourdon bell.
Every year during the remembrance day on 4 May, this is one of the two places for the national remembrance of the day (the other one being the Dam in Amsterdam), and hundreds of people from all over the country come here to pay tribute to those killed in World War II.
