Born 1744, a fouth generation Quaker, studied at a Quarker school and attended the College of Philadephia (now part of University of Pennsylvania), married 1767.

1772 - 76 member of Pennsylvania legislature
1774 - 94 moved to Berks County on his estate Angelica, which later became the Berks County Poor House
1774 - 76 attended the Continental congress
1775 - won an appointment as a major in the Continental Army and was expelled as a Quaker, also became an aide to General Washington, became a colonel and quarter master
1776 - became a brigadier general, preferred action over his administrative duties which weren't done correctly (took place in battles at Long Island, NY, Trenton, NJ and Priceton, NJ
1777 - became a major general, then came under attack for the poor job he was doing as quarter master and resigned
1777 - 78 Congessional Board of War
1778 - 79 State Assembly
1782 - 84 Continental Congress
1783 - 84 Dec. to June as President of the Continental Congress
1787 - Constitutioal Convention
1785 - 88 legislature
1799 - 1800 legislature
1788 - 90 President of the Supreme Executive Council
1789 - 90 Chaired Constitutional convention
1790 - 99 1st Governor of Pennsylvania
1799 - left Philadelphia because of his lavish life style, his creditors where hounding him
1880 - died pennyless in Lancaster at age 56, The State of Pennsylvania paid for his funeral
