This frieze is a copy of the frieze of the Parthenon in Greece. It was added by Scottish sculptor John Henning (1771-1851) and his son John junior (1802-57) [1].
The architect of the building was Decimus Burton (1800-1881). The building was completed in 1829.
The frieze was added at considerable expense, and the The promoter of the idea was the Secretary of the Admiralty, J W Croker. Others would have preferred the money to be spent on the creation of an ice house to provide cold storage in the summer, which led to the composition of the witticism: [2]
I'm John Wilson Croker,
I do as I please;
Instead of an Ice House
I give you - a frieze!
