"On September 26, 1836, Theodoro Gonzalez received a grant for 1,5,218.62 acre RanchoRincon de La Puente Del Monte." Teodoro's son, Alfredo and Mariano, laid out the town on the rancho and assured its prosperity by deeding a 100 ft right of way to Southern Pacific Railway, which arrived in late 1872. The Gonzales post office was established on December 1, 1873. (no one knows who the city got its spelling since the family spelled it with a Z) The city incorporated 73 years later on Jjanuary 17, 1947."
