2023 Update: This waymarked plaque was removed in 2020 for obvious racism and celebration of colonialism. It has not been replaced.
The plaque reads:
"In honor of
the first white women and
children of the thirty families
who marched through California
with the colonization expedition
of
Jaun Bautista de Anza
and camped near here May 1776
Santa Barbara Chapter
Daughters of the American Revolution
1938"
Spanish settlement of this area began in earnest in April 1782, with the founding of the Presidio by Governor Neve and the Mission by Father Serra, each a few blocks from here.
This monument was placed in the garden of the County Courthouse about a decade after the courthouse was built. It is unthinkable that a plaque with the same wording would be made public in today's multicultural political climate.
Group that erected the marker: Daughters of the American Revolution
