Text of plaque:

Oregon City

In the 1840s, thousands of wagon trains journeyed to Oregon City from Independence, Missouri along the Oregon Trail. The other principal trails and historic routes that crossed the west were the Santa Fe (begun in 1821), California, Mormon (1846-1869), Lewis and Clark (1804-1806), Pony Express (1860s) and Transcontinental Railroad (1860s). The rugged pathways and their pioneers changed the face and history of the United States. Oregon City retains an important role in the region through unique historical landmarks, stunning geography, thoughtful urban planing and protected natural resources.
