Built in 1836, the Amoskeag Dam was intended to provide power to the textile mills that lined the Merrimack River. Following legislation, A fish ladder was included to accommodate migrating species, and in 1921 the dam was re-built, the fish ladder was updated, and a hydro station added. In 1990, a visiting center was built, with viewing windows into the 54-step fish ladder. Since then a learning center and an exhibit hall were opened. The Amoskeag Fishways Learning and Visitors Center web site contains much more information.
