When Thomas W. Patterson inherited a huge land grant in Stanislaus County in 1902, he divided it into ranches of various sizes. In the center, he plotted the design of a town that now proudly bears his name. Determined to be different, he didn't use the common square grid, but modeled his town after non less than Paris, with a plaza in the center and consecutive circles around it (which to this day makes driving through Patterson a real adventure).
The building in the center is a tribute to California's Spanish Mission period. Over the last 100 years, this building was used as town hall, trading post, post office, chamber of commerce and museum. In 2004, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
