George Warren Brown was president The Brown Shoe Co. a,nd pioneer shoe manufacturer of St. Louis.  He born, Granville, N. Y., Mar. 21, 1853; son of David and Melinda (Roblee) Brown. He married, St. Louis, Apr. 7, 1885, Bettie Bofinger.  Began active career in St. Louis as shipping clerk for a wholesale shoe house, May 1, 1873, and in ten mouths became traveling salesman for the firm, gaining a position as one of its leading men.  He was greatly impressed with the possibilities of St. Louis as a shoe manufacturing center and being unable to induce his employers to attempt manufacturing, decided to enter the field on his own. In 1878 organized the first successful wholesale shoe manufacturing house of St. Louis under the name of the Bryan-Brown Shoe Co. and later The Brown Shoe Co., of which has been the head from the time of organization until his death (The success of this pioneer concern caused others to follow, and St. Louis in comparatively a short time became the greatest shoe market in the United States.)   Mr. Brown died December 13, 1921.  The Brown Shoe Company continues today and is one of the world's largest shoe manufacturing companies and is a multi-billion dollar enterprise

The hexagonal mausoleum was designed by St. Louis architectural firm of  Mauran, Russell and Crowell in 1928. The mausoleum is located across the street from his brother (A.D. Brown)
