Edgar L. Marston was born in the St. Louis area, the son of a minister. He became an attorney and worked with the growing railroad industry in St. Louis. He later moved to New York City and was involved in banking and was on a number of boards for corporations. He gave considerable sums of money to educational and musical institutions including Brown University, Vassar College and the New York Philharmonic.
