Bridgeport is a small community with about 1,700 residents. It is located along the southern shore of Oneida Lake in Onondaga County.
The first settlers called this location "The Rapids", the next name given to the area was "Barnesville". The creek was forded here at the rapids, being the most shallow place after leaving Oneida Lake. At the building of the first bridge, the village was officially called "Bridgeport".
