The 4 Parish churches to be named after the 4 evangelists which were built in Barrow in Furness were uniquely all consecrated on the same day of the 26th.of September 1877,St.Marks being the largest of the churches and having seating for 658,this day of consecration of the 4 churches has become a Red Letter day in the history of the town of Barrow in Furness.
The architects of the church were Austin and Paley of Lancaster.
The church suffered war damage in 1941 and was restored in 1946.
