The church was founded in 1874 and enlarged in 1897,to the left of Bethel chapel is another chapel,this was the original Wesleyan chapel also built in 1874,the 2 chapels are now one church.
The primitive Methodist church was an early secession from the Wesleyan Methodist church which was particularly successful in in evangelising agriculture and industrial communities,in 1932 the Primitive Methodists joined the Wesleyan Methodists and the United Methodists to form The Methodist church of Great Britain,to which Hartington street church is now a part of.
