Nikolaus Pevsner has some details in his book 'The Buildings of England, Bedfordshire' which describe the milestone.

The 'Obelisk Pump' was built in 1784 by Sir William Chambers' design. There are engraved directions on all four sides and the old pumping mechanism is still in place.
