In 1896 the first bridge was built over Sugar Creek at Cox Ford. That bridge, constructed of iron, was washed away in the flood of 1913. Joseph A. Britton won the contract to replace the bridge. Britton recycled the wooden arches from the Armiesburg covered bridge, which had also been lost to the flood. He also reused the cut stone abutments of the iron bridge, but topped these with an additional five feet of poured concrete to raise the level of the bridge. This two piece construction is evident in the first photo.
The bridge is still in use today on an unpaved road adjacent to Turkey Run State Park. A public parking area and canoe landing is located southwest of the bridge. Cox Ford Covered Bridge is #14-61-34 in the World Guide.
Current Condition of Bridge: Bridgehunter.com describes the bridge as "structurally defiicient," with a "fair" superstructure and "poor" substructure. The need for maintenance is apparent.
