This was originally the home of J.F. Gosbey (the "e" in his name has been dropped from the name of the building since his day). He opened his house to summer boarders at a time when Pacific Grove was barely more than a tent encampment. That success encouraged him to enlarge the place several times, for example adding the turret in front and the gabled sides. He met passengers at the train with a horse-drawn baggage wagon; he also had quite a business in town as "J.S. Gosbey's People's Transfer / Baggage, Freight / Furniture & Piano Moving". Because of its historical significance and architecture, this building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It is now a highly-rated bed and breakfast inn, operated by the Four Sisters hotel group.
