From historical marker:
"Built in 1852 on the site of the town's original Meeting House, the Center School helped Sturbridge consolidate its outlying one-room district schools. It continued as a site for elementary education until the 1950's, when the present Burgess Elementary School was constructed. From that time until 1988, the Center School housed many town offices, including the Sturbridge Police Department."
There are plans to move some city offices back to the Center School once it has been renovated.
