Firstly,the oddly named village or more properly the hamlet of Dendron is just coincidental that it's name is the same as Tree in Greek,The village was mentioned as Dene in the Doomesday Book,and the name is thought to mean"sheltering place for deer".
In 1652 the famous Quaker George Fox preached here,with some success.
The renown artist George Romney who was born in nearby Dalton attended the church when it was also used as a school.
In May 1892 St.Matthew's was made parish church of the new parish of Dendron.
To celebrate the 350th.anniversary of the church,the church roof was renewed in 1991.
