The observatory was constructedfrom 1933 to 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), Company 927 of Camp F-23 (Camp Belknap). The structure is an open shelter built of lava rock found at the site. There are a number of large viewing windows plus small viewing ports aligned with the Cascade peaks. In 1937, a 36” diameter bronze peak finder was installed on top of the observatory. The observatory was named for Dee Wright, a Forest Service packer for 24 years and the CCC foreman for the construction, he died in 1934 before the observatory was completed. Information comes from signs at site and on the Willamette National Forest website.
