Shade tobacco is grown in the Connecticut river valley north of Hartford into southern Massachusetts. This tobacco is used as wrappers for cigars. (

Tobacco barns are used to cure the leaf before shipping to processing into the finished product. The barns have slats on the sides that open to allow air to circulate through the barn.
In this farm there are over two dozen barns. Early in September is the best time to see them in use. I've lived in the area for over 20 years and have only seen an open tobacco barn once on Sept 5, 2006. (see the image gallery).
The shape of these tobacco barns are consistent with the ones around the area. The only major differences between barns at other farms are the length of the building and ways to open the sides to allow ventilation.
