"The Anvil" - Rock City - Olean, New York - Nature's Balanced Rocks on Waymarking.com

"The Anvil" is one of many rock formations located at Rock City Park. Rock City Park is located a few miles south of Olean, New York and is believed to be the worlds largest exposure of quartz conglomerate. It was discovered around 1890 while scouting out the area for places to drill for oil. The area quickly became a tourist attraction as the word got around that the huge, many stories high rocks were found, tucked away in the hills south of Olean. The place became so popular that a huge pavilion and hotel were built near the rock formations and several well known celebrities came to visit, including John Phillip Sousa, who came and played music at the pavilion. The hotel and pavilion are long gone and now, at that location, sits the visitors center and gift shop with all sorts of memorabilia going back to the early days of this popular location. There are several trails that lead down to the bottom of the rock formations, allowing visitors to see the rocks from a different perspective, showing just how enormous these rocks really are. Along the main trail, there are signs pointing out the unusual rock formations that have been found here, such as, Pulpit Rock, Sentinel Rock, Half Sphinx, and Anvil Rock. Anvil Rock is the only balanced rock in the park and has been estimated to weigh in at over 1000 tons. When viewed from certain angles, it is shaped like a huge anvil. Rock City Park does charge an entrance fee of $4.50 per adult and $2.50 for children 6 to 12. The park is open from May to October from 9 am to 6 pm.
