This marker was placed by the National Weather Service and is located in a small park. The park is dedicated to Martin H. "Buddy" Mitchell who served 17 years on the Rome City Commission.
On April 1, 1886 the Oostanaula River reached 15.29 feet above flood level flooding the downtown area of Rome, Ga. Due to the flood and to reduce the impact from future floods, Broad Street businesses first floors were filled in, making present day Broad Street eight feet higher then it was in 1886.
